Abstract: This presentation will feature innovative custom plastic products developed for leading OEMs, with particular attention to the advantages of incorporating insert and overmolding into product design. It will also cover the basic design rules for assuring higher quality plastic parts. Tips for making great parts will be presented, such as minimizing surface imperfections, proper shutoff design and how to make changes to increase mold flow and minimize material stress. The seminar will include general material selection tools, as well as new custom material options.

Barbara Roberts is President and CEO of Wright Engineered Plastics Inc., an injection molding and contract-manufacturing company serving the medical, telecommunications and industrial equipment companies such as Agilent Technologies and Abbott Laboratories. Under her leadership Wright has received numerous awards and certifications for manufacturing quality and environmental stewardship. Ms. Roberts, a UC Berkeley graduate, has been recruited by Stanford to mentor engineering and business students. Ms. Roberts has served on the executive committee of the SF Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and is co-manager of EWB’s Appropriate Technologies Design Team. She is past President of the Silicon Valley Engineering Council , the Society of Plastic Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and serves as a trustee of Golden Gate University
Karrie Bertsch has over 13 years professional experience in the medical device industry with over 11 years of experience working in early stage start-ups. Prior to joining Wright Engineered Plastics, Karrie held a variety of engineering and management positions developing ENT therapy solutions minimally invasive laparoscopic instrumentation, cardiac bypass device and vascular clamping instruments. She has a history of success in new product introduction, design for manufacturing, project management and medical device design control activities. Karrie holds an MBA from San Jose State University and a BS in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
Chuck Bialas is an Application Development Engineer specializing in the Healthcare Market, for Nexeo Solutions, a global distributor of thermoplastics. Mr. Bialas, a University of Texas at Austin graduate, has 19 years of experience in the plastics industry. Chuck has held multiple positions in thermoplastic materials including Product Management, Sales, Regional Sales Management, and now Application Development Engineering roles. He has extensive experience with all kinds of thermoplastics and now specializes in assisting customers with material selection, design and regulatory issues.
